At Key Protect, we know that the job you do can affect your life insurance premiums, but we were still surprised by some of the jobs that lead to a higher cost. Number 3, however, wasn’t quite so unexpected…

Although the mining industry has long been shrinking within the UK, mining still ranks as number 3 in the list of top 10 jobs that are likely to increase your life insurance premiums. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report, 150 workers were injured, and 2 killed, between 2012 to 2013 alone.

Risks associated with mining:

Cave-ins are a common accident for all underground mining operations

Gas explosions can occur in coal mines, due to a build up of methane gas

Equipment collisions or crushing – mining equipment is very large, and very heavy, representing potential danger to all workers

Chemicals that are used on the job can be hazardous if not used or stored correctly

Electrocution from machinery, if it isn’t safe to use

Fires caused by gas leaks, electrical faults, or chemical spillage
