Stress-related illness accounted for 23 sick days per worker in 2014, & private health insurance companies now reward customers who take steps to reduce stress to a healthy level.

In our Stress Less series, expert coach Soraya Shaw shares her simple but powerful ways to step off the treadmill and feel calmer in your daily life.

“Set – and enforce – boundaries.”

“Where are your boundaries? What would you like to say “no” to? Most of us want to be helpful to others, and find ourselves saying “yes” to too much, even though we have other commitments. Remember – if you say yes to something, you’re usually saying no to something else. Building on Tip #2, does the “yes” support your priorities? What will make you feel under less pressure, and therefore more motivated? Instead of automatically saying “yes”, politely explain why you can’t help this time. If there is an alternative solution, your refusal will help that person to engage the more creative, problem-solving part of the brain, so ultimately you are helping them in a different way!”
