Stress-related illness accounted for 23 sick days per worker in 2014, & private health insurance companies now reward customers who take steps to reduce stress to a healthy level.

In our Stress Less series, expert coach Soraya Shaw shares her simple but powerful ways to step off the treadmill and feel calmer in your daily life.

“Replace ‘I should’ with ‘I want’…”

“Once you’ve begun to habituate tricks 1 & 2, you should be getting a clearer idea of what is really important, rather than what you think you “should” be doing. If you hear the word “should” in your head, stop! It’s overly pressurised language, and tends to result in energy diverting into stress, instead of going into things you “want” to do. Replace the “should” with “want”, even if it is the same action, and you’ll get more energy and focus to achieve it.

Soraya is the founder & director of Springboard Coaching, which specialises in management and leadership development. If you have a stress related problem you can’t find the answer to, she’ll be happy to answer on this blog – just contact us here with your question.
